Mass timber has proven fire performance – vital in Australian conditions. In a fire, mass timber will not twist or spall. Instead, the outer layer chars, forming an insulating barrier that slows the burn rate and helps to maintain structural integrity for longer. In high-risk environments, fire performance can be further improved through the application of simple fire-resistant cladding.
We commissioned extensive fire assessments to test XLAM’s performance. Fire resistance ratings (FRL/FRR) refer to the fire exposure time during which a building keeps its structure. Our CLT panels achieved a fire resistance rating of 120 minutes, in compliance with Australian NCC and NZBC. This rating applies to situations with and without protective cladding.
