Engineered to perform

XLAM mass timber is renowned for its remarkable strength, which rivals that of structural steel and concrete but at a fraction of the weight.

Strong & durable

Lighter than steel and concrete, XLAM has a strength-to-weight ratio approximately 20% higher than steel, and 4–5 times higher than non-reinforced concrete. Because of this, mass timber performs very well during strong winds and earthquakes – ideal for Australian and New Zealand conditions.

What makes it strong?

The engineered composition of CLT and GLT ensures high load-bearing capacity and excellent resistance to both compression and tension forces, making it a robust and reliable choice for modern construction.

Superior fire performance

Mass timber has proven fire performance – vital in Australian conditions. In a fire, mass timber will not twist or spall. Instead, the outer layer chars, forming an insulating barrier that slows the burn rate and helps to maintain structural integrity for longer. In high-risk environments, fire performance can be further improved through the application of simple fire-resistant cladding.

We commissioned extensive fire assessments to test XLAM’s performance. Fire resistance ratings (FRL/FRR) refer to the fire exposure time during which a building keeps its structure. Our CLT panels achieved a fire resistance rating of 120 minutes, in compliance with Australian NCC and NZBC. This rating applies to situations with and without protective cladding.

Treatment & quality

We rigorously test every panel that leaves our facility, so we can stand by our products with absolute confidence.

01.

Treatment

Engineered preservative treatments are available to further enhance the durability of XLAM products. When H3 treated, XLAM products are protected from both decay and borers. The feedstock is pressure impregnated with H3 low odour treatment which is free from VOCs.

The treatment is third-party certified by CodeMark to perform, meaning products are fit-for-purpose and conforming with the performance requirements of the National Construction Code (NCC) Building Code of Australia and the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) of New Zealand. Treatment is also Declare Red List Free.

Quality Assurance

Our testing schedule leaves nothing to chance. Before leaving our facilities, multiple samples are cut from every panel which undergo rigorous testing. Every billet is checked for glue line durability, dimensional tolerances, and moisture content. XLAM CLT is treated in accordance with the rigorous standards of CodeMark – an independent third party who ensures product consistency and performance.

XLAM GLT is also manufactured under strict conditions and carries the S-Mark and entire manufacturing process is independent audited to ensure performance.
